2012 Florida Braille Challenge

2012 Florida Braille Challenge Logo

April 2012

The Braille Challenge is a national program of the Braille Institute® hosted by regional schools and agencies that serve blind and visually impaired children. It is the only national braille literacy competition of its kind in the country, and is specifically designed to challenge and reward blind students for their study of braille, which is essential to their future academic and employment success.

From January to March of this year, over 100 braille readers from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade used the Force of Braille to promote braille literacy across the state of Florida. They opposed Emperor Print-a-Tine and Darth Braille Hater by showing off their braille skills in various competitions of the “Braille Wars”!

The four 2012 Florida Regional Braille Challenge events were incredibly successful, meaningful and memorable to all the students, families and teachers involved.

Braille Works is proud to have been a sponsor of the Florida Braille Challenge this year but we’re more proud of all the children who competed. Some of the kids even took the time to write “thank you” letters to us; how thoughtful is that?

If you’d like to read what the children wrote; the embossed braille letters are found below along with hand-written translations for people who are sighted. The text for each letter is also captioned for users with screen-readers. These letters were scanned, so the embossed braille may not show up very well we wanted to share with you the kind words and thoughts sent to us by the kids participating in the 2012 Florida Braille Challenge.

The students names are blanked-out for obvious reasons.

Dear Staff of Braille Works Inc.,

I very much want to thank all of you for making the Braille Challenge more fun.  You all did this by bringing all of the students including me the drum circle.  I enjoyed it very much and I did realize it was an amusing activity to perform with friends. I hope you guys bring us the drum circle next year!

Next I want to thank you for making the Braille Challenge 2012 shirts. By the way, it was a good idea to make the shirts for different teams in different colors.  Those shirts always served as free souvenirs. I doubt that next years’ Braille Challenge will be as fun without you making all those awesome donations.

FL Braille Challenge Student Letter 2Dear Braille Works,

Thank you for sponsoring the South Florida Regional Braille Challenge.  I had tons of fun. And the shirts were cute, awesomely colored and unlike most shirts; it fit me.  Most of the time when I order shirts they’re too big. Also, the drum circle sounded great. I’m definitely going next year. Great sponsors such as yourselves make it fun. Thanks again.

Thank you for the amazing t-shirts and the exciting drum circle! It was all very nice and fun.

I enjoyed the drum circle very much and played along to the rhythms. The t-shirts were also very nice, I got a blue one. It’s my favorite color.

I appreciate your kindness to the Braille Challenge. You made the Challenge fun and thanks again.
