A true story about bootlegging brothers called, The Wettest County in the World, was written by one of their grandsons, Matt Bondurand, and has now been made into the crime-thriller titled Lawless.
As a result of prohibition during the depression, the Bondurand brothers make and sell moonshine from the mountains of Franklin County, Virginia. Forrest Bondurand (Tom Hardy) is the oldest brother and a war hero who seems to be indestructible against the mobs from the city with guns, knives, or brass-knuckles. His youngerbrother Howard Bondurand (Jason Clark) seems kinda crazy, but also has a mean streak. Their youngest brother, Jack Bondurand (Shia Labeouf) really isn’t made out for the rough criminal lifestyle and he even goes out with Bertha (Mia Wasikowska) who is the preacher’s daughter.
Local people had been leaving the violent Bondurands alone until a corrupt special deputy named Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) threatens to shut down their bootlegging unless the brothers pay him protection money. The brothers aren’t afraid of anybody and refuse. Then, wen Forrest is attacked with a knife and his girl friend Maggie (Jessica Chastain) is violated by some of the deputy’s henchmen, the brothers fight back.
This film is brutal and bloody and it has plenty of action, but it isn’t the script that makes it so good. It’s a result of all the colorful characters and the entire cast being at the top of their game. Tom Hardy should be nominated for an Oscar every time he’s on screen and even Shia Labeouf holds his own in the company of great actors like Gary Oltman and Guy Pierce.
My wife thought Tom Hardy looked really buff, which has to be the result of his super villain character Baine, in the Batman movie. To keep me from being jealous, she said Hardy doesn’t look as buff as me but even I can see through that.
The biggest problem with this movie a few uneven scenes that just don’t seem to fit together sometimes. I’m giving this interesting and entertaining film a B Rating.
Lawless has been given an R rating by the MPAA.
